The back of her pale hand swept across her cheeks as she eased away from him. Amelia knew it was impossible to catch all the tears before they could be seen, but she would attempt it anyway, out of past habit. The usual embarrassment that followed an outburst of this magnitude did not come immediately, only the mix of relief and panic that she'd just told one of her most guarded secrets. Would he tell anyone? No, it wasn't likely that he would.

Gathering the rest of her resolve, Amelia glanced at Neil with red rimmed eyes and gave a sad, little smile. "Thank you."

"That's what friends are for," Neil whispered his reply, smiling faintly, though he knew Amelia couldn't see him. This was a breakthrough for Amelia, and he was confident that things would get better from here on end.

"I'll stay for as long as you want me," he said, giving her the choice.

Allowing the weak smile to strengthen, Amelia took another small swipe at her cheeks before clearing her throat. The worst was over, and she knew she didn't have to worry about lapsing into another moment of tears.

Standing, she looked down at him before turning her gaze to the kitchen. "I can get you your tea now..." although it wasn't a direct response to his offer, she knew he'd take it as an invitation to stay just a little longer.
