Yuletide recs 2012!

Dec 26, 2012 23:17

I always intend to do up a rec post and then get distracted by shiny fic and never actually post it . . . but this year I intend to change that.

There's No Such Thing as Elegators - Princeless
It's Princeless fic. If you know Princeless, read this. If you don't know Princeless, read Princeless.

T-Rex Visits the Creation Museum - Jurassic Park
Exactly what it says on the tin. Oh god this is the fic that every evolution-believer who's heard about the museum needs to read. It's deeply satisfying in an odd way.

Paper Bag Diplomacy - Paper Bag Princess
A fully-illustrated Paper Bag Princess fic. Featuring reasonable librarians, a need for sensible armor, and a dragon who's fairly nice when you get to know him.

Restoration: The Manual on Utter Destruction of Castles, Disappointing Princes, and other Customary Mishaps - Paper Bag Princess
This year's Yuletide has been appealing to my inner child. More of Princess Elizabeth and the dragon.

An Abecedary of Tragic Ends, Explicated for the Reader - Gashlycrumb Tinies
Twenty-six Gashlycrumb Tinies drabbles, all with fascinating insight into their characters.

What You Make of It - Johnny Maxwell
A nice Johnny Maxwell fic; there's no way Johnny's gonna have a normal life, even when he grows up.

Attack Chickens, Children, and Other Hazards of Suburban Life - Calvin and Hobbes/Hobbes and Bacon
If you haven't read Hobbes and Bacon, you should. There's only four strips, but it establishes a beautiful future for Calvin and Susie and their daughter who is unquestionably her father's daughter.

A Brief History of Western Philosophy - Hobbes and Bacon
Ditto.

"Worked okay so far?" - Hobbes and Bacon
This is, somehow, better than the first two Hobbes and Bacon fics. This demonstrates Calvin is an awesome dad and Susie has fully embraced his weirdness despite -- technically -- being the sensible one. And, uh,k spoilers but awesome:"Do you think it's possible we've given our daughter stuffed animals that are more or less acting like idiosyncratic, I don't know, fetish bundles or something, for wandering semi-powerful entities beyond the knowledge of most of mankind, or at least the part of it that doesn't believe in spirits anymore?"

You are What You Eat - Chew
Chew doesn't get enough love, so it's nice to see fic for it.

Fa Mulan and the Triwizard Tournament Conundrum - Mulan/Harry Potter
Disney characters go to Hogwarts; Mulan is, expectedly, awesome.

The Ultimate Cash Crop - Nextwave
A Nextwave fic that feels like canon, in all the right ways. And the **** wrong ones, too.

Weird Stuff Happens - Gravity Falls, with minor crossovers
One of my favorite themes in fic is when characters who went through incredibly odd experiences in canon go back to 'normal' life after, they can't quite adjust. Because screw "There's no place like home", Oz has advantages that depression-era Kansas lacks.

The Rule of Cool - Gravity Falls
Wendy, Mabel, and her friends hang out and have a sleepover. Typical girl stuff -- Popcorn, movies, and fending off a velociraptor attack.

Just a Bit of the Happily Ever After Aftermath - Enchanted
A story where exes get along remarkably well and a six-year-old has excellent logic.

On Formally Undecidable Propositions in Principia Mathematica - Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage
Lovelace and Babbage fic. What, you need more?

The Birth of an Empire - Incredibles
Edna Mode gets her start.

The Greatest Good - Incredibles
A look at Helen Parr, through the years.

Once, I was Mighty - Bomb Girls
Betty/Kate; it'll be jossed in a week, no doubt, but nice to have a fic that remembers the difference between religion and abusive asshats who hide behind religion.

Lobelia and Aconite - Addams Family
Gomez and Morticia's first meeting.

Each Milestone Brings Us a Step Closer to Death: A Wedding Story - Boy Meets World/Addams Family
. . . it's a Boy Meets World/Addams Family crossover. That remembers Minkus exists.

And that's it for now because I just remembered these things are normally in batches of, like, ten.
