I redrew Ekaterina's dress in my sketch book. I looked at an assload of ref pics, and after reading (what seemed to me like) a ton of reference material on the subject of this period's dresses, I finally made some fabric choices and some design choices ( ... )

Whew! ;) I'm doing similar stuff to Mary, though she's got more going on to begin with than Ekaterina, so fewer stuffs are being added. I plan on doing some kind of ruching design on the overskirt in the the same fabric (probably those figure eight ruffles you see all the time, because they're easy :P), but that's the only big change, I think. I did get a bunch of swatches of various silk taffetas, dupionis, and satins, but I just couldn't find the right color pink to make me happy. (Okay, that's a lie.. I found the perfect dupioni for $14 a yard. Um, no.) I declared casa Good Enough, because at $4 a lot of things are Good Enough. The contrast is a dark burgundy which is proving an easier color to find, so now I just have to find a fabric that I like. I want something with texture (I'm thinking something nice and slubby.. I got a swatch of this, but it's just too orange. I can't justify the color being that far off, even if it would make a fabulous skirt), but nothing's really called out to me yet. I'll be hitting the big discount ( ... )

Ya, the dupioni I was looking at is in the home dec section at Joanns and is ... 27.00/yard. *falls over* So I'm looking in LA first. And agreed, *repeats mantra* "it's just a costume, it's just a costume".

I think the figure eights will look nice on Mary, and I also agree that the cinnobar is def. a little too orange (too much cinnamon!) XD Happy hunting for the rest of your fabric. ^^

Comment from the sidelines: personally I'd think it better to go with period-flattish than clueless-animator-round, myself... ^^

I might add that the possibilities of successfully wearing the costume to periodish / non-anime events may be greater if its shape is more period-accurate (even if the fabric ain't exactly, but many people will cut slack on the fabric, knowing budget issues... :p )

Hee, I'd probably never wear it to an historic event. I'm too much of a perfectionist. ;)

ooookay, I'm confused - not by your work so far, that looks great, btw.

There's an anime called "Chevalier D'Eon"? Does it have any connection to the historical transvestite/transgender personage?

Yup, its that D'Eon. There are bunch of other historical figures too. Its fun!
Now that reminds, me, I need to watch more then just 8 episodes, lol.

Yes - though they take it in a completely different direction. Like. Magic and possession and zombies and all that.

It's not that bad, really.. I made my big pannier hoop when I'd been sewing for just over a year. It's just following patterns, yo. ;)
