Okay, so I know I'm supposed to be working on Summer, homework, and various other projects, but this little guy just waltzed into my head in the middle of something.

Summary/Author's Notes: Hojo has managed a Coup de tat on the Shinra Electric Co.; he now, more or less, rules the world. With the last Ancient captured, Cloud will do anything to free Aeris, but Zack is unaware of the blond's plans. Will his will be strong enough to survive and get back what's been taken from him? With the help of friends cast off from high places, Zack and Aeris search The Planet for a specific blond...and to kill Hojo. Like I said, this isn't done yet and I have no idea how I'm going to format it yet when I do have it written. Here's a piece of the puzzle for your enjoyment. BTW, I was listening to "To Zanarkand" from the FFX OST when I wrote this :P
“No! Cloud! You don’t have to do this!” He pleaded.
“Don’t you see, Zack?” The determined blonde replied. “It’s the only way to get her back safely.”
“No! It’s not!” Zack nearly yelled, feeling more and more helpless.
“Don’t start acting petulant,” the nasally, clinical voice admonished. “You should be grateful that I’m in a giving mood.”
Zack opened his mouth to say something -a retort perhaps?- but the scalding words died on his tongue when Cloud’s softly spoken words reached his ears.
“Zack, please.”
A pained whine escaped the soldier’s lips. He was torn; just what was he supposed to do? He wanted Cloud, more than anything, that’s what his heart told him; his instincts, however, demanded Aeris. His instincts felt that he had to protect her, and only Cloud to an extent. Even his subconscious knew the blonde’s potential even if he stubbornly refused to admit it.
“I know you love her” -Zack opened his mouth to protest, but Cloud held up a hand for silence- “I know you love me,” he continued, almost too soft for his enhanced hearing to pick up. “They have him, but if I do this, and you get her back” -Cloud indicated the still form in Tseng’s arms- “Then I know you’ll be able to find me again.”
Zack, for all his carefree nature and macho posturing, felt like he wanted to cry. Before he could say anything Cloud turned his back on him, gaining the courage and backbone he’d been trying to instill in the timid youth since he’d taken him under his wing.
“You give Aeris to Zack and then I’ll go with you willingly,” Cloud informed the others.
The smile Hojo graced them with made Zack want to throw up; Hojo, period, usually made Zack want to either throw up or kill things…mainly Hojo.
“I’m so glad you saw the hopelessness of your fruitless endeavours,” was the scientist’s oily reply. “Tseng, give the girl to the soldier and take the blonde into our…safekeeping.”
Zack took Aeris’ unconscious form from Tseng and watched as he led Cloud away; the blonde walking like a docile chocobo at his side.
A breeze picked up, bringing the familiar scent of Cloud’s tears to his nose and his heart ached knowing that he couldn’t be the one to comfort him and wipe the tears away, that, and there were rivers of them to be shed in the future. He also had the slight breeze to thank, for it brought Cloud’s final words to him in the breathy whisper only he and Sephiroth could hear.
“He’s only doing this because he thinks he can retrieve her at any time. Disappear, Zack; find me again. If you lose her, you’ll never be able to find me.
“No matter what happens, I will always remember you; always love you.”
Zack watched helpless, as the armed grunts backed off to where they came from; guns still aimed at him and his burden. His lavender eyes watched, as Cloud climbed on a helicopter-his ears picking up the sound of compressed air being released- the youth was tranquilized and hauled the rest of the way into the chopper by someone.
‘At least he won’t suffer from motion sickness’ Zack thought as the grunts, faces apologetic -they had been Cloud’s unit- got in their own helicopters.
It was as the sound of the rotors were adding that Zack finally lost his nerve; his ever preset cheerfulness. Zack Fair, Soldier First Class, fell to his knees in the damp soil, clutching Aeris to his chest, and cried.
He cried for the unfairness of it all; he cried for the suffering Cloud would endure; he cried out his hate and anger. But Zack mostly cried to try and fill the hole that had been torn in his chest-the place where Cloud had been was strangely empty.
He didn’t know how he ended up in Sector 6, let alone at Aeris’ house, but by that time his girl had started to wake up. He smiled. She was so much like the flowers she tended; beautiful and strong.
“Just a tranquilizer,” she said before he could ask anything; green eyes unfocused and muddy with sleep. They cleared immediately, all too quickly for him, and he found that he had walked into the garden his girl kept behind and beside the house.
“You’re hurting,” Aeris said again in that knowing way of hers, fingers reaching p to brush the tear tracks that lined his ace, traveling further to card through his hair. Recognition then understanding filled those bottomless green eyes of hers. His eyes burned.
“Oh Zack,” Aeris cried, flinging her arms around Zack’s neck; Zack, likewise, clung fiercely to the girl in his arms; drinking in whatever comfort he could glean from her while trying valiantly not to cry. Her murmured reassurances were not helping his composure at all.
It seemed like hours had passed before Aeris withdrew her arms from around his lap waist and contented herself with the comfortable sprawl she was in.
“Now,” she began, “ the last thing I remember is selling flowers over near Sector 4 and running into Cloud. What did I miss?”
Zack smiled. Oh how he loved his Aeris. He squeezed her and she gazed back at him, patient; her eyes full of reassurance.
