Chapter 1: Wanting
Gerard cherishes this post-concert alone time, the half-hour or so he spends alone in his dressing room, changing his clothes and transitioning from his wild stage persona to his quieter, everyday self. He leans against the counter for a moment, soothes his strained throat with a swig of bottled water, and just as he's taking off his jacket--god, that thing makes him sweat like a bitch--he hears a knock on the door.

"Come in," he says a bit reluctantly. He figures it's Mikey, who often comes to dissect the evening's show with him, ask if he played all right. But the person who enters is completely unfamiliar. He (she?) is tall and pale, with short, dark hair and eyes that glint like polished pewter. She (he?) is dressed in a trim, form-flattering suit and smiles at Gerard like an old friend, though he has no idea who this person is.

"Long time no see." The voice is just as ambiguous as the stranger's appearance, and Gerard finally gives up on trying to figure out its gender.

"Sorry, do I know you?"

"You used to. Very well, in fact."

Gerard tries to think of a polite way to word the question Who the fuck are you?, but his visitor speaks up before he can. "Remember that girl who cornered you backstage...."

...and you said you weren't interested, you didn't do groupies, but she was insistent and far too attractive to resist, and you ended up with her on top of you on a hotel bed, shaking and sweating and wanting to cry, oh god, it'd been so long since the last time you felt like this....

Gerard squints. "You don't look anything like her."

"No, but I was with you that night."

"Come again?"

"What about that time with Frank, on the tour bus...."

...when the two of you started making out for no reason other than that you were both bored and craved human contact, but it turned from innocent time-killing into the two of you naked in his bunk, with his mouth around your cock....

"Sorry, I still don't--"

"I think you do." Its eyes flash dangerously. "Remember the old days? The alcohol, the cocaine...."

...the poisons that kept you going, got you through each day, caused you to make a complete ass of yourself on countless occasions, but you didn't care, you were too busy killing off your brain cells one by one....

"Yeah," Gerard says softly, "I remember."

"Know who I am yet?"

And somehow, he does. "Desire."

"Knew you'd get it eventually."

"Why are you here?"

The smile returns. "Aren't I allowed to check up on an old friend?"

"Friend?" Gerard says incredulously. "You almost killed me."

"That doesn't mean I didn't love you. You were always one of my favorites--you gave in so easily, lost control so beautifully. You were dancing with Delirium a lot those days, too, but don't expect her to visit you. She's a bit shy."

Gerard steadily holds Desire's gaze. "That still doesn't explain why you've come."

"I just wanted to see how you were holding up. Make sure you weren't getting cocky."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

Once again, Desire's eyes take on that dangerous cast. "Just because you've shaken me off for now doesn't mean I won't come back. Remember, I have the power to make you want whatever I want you to. Will you always be strong enough to resist me?"

"I can try."

"Spoken like a true fighter. But that sort of defiance will only get you so far."

"That's not all I've got."

"Yes, I know. You place so much faith in those friends of yours."

"They've never given me any reason to do otherwise."

"Perhaps not yet, but they won't be there for you forever."

"In this life, who is? They're here for now. That's all that matters."

Desire smiles once more and says, "We'll see," before turning and leaving the room.
