Need suggestions for a book to read - not too long or short, preferably in the historical fiction, or Sci fi, fantasy genre......

something not too popular and not too obscure.....

i second a vote for devil in the white city. also a hugely popular fantasy (which you've probably read - and if you haven't, do it right away): jonathan strange and mr. norrell. i'm currently reading the eyre affair, which is actually a fun spy/fantasy peppered with lots of classic literature references.

Shibumi by Travanian probably not up your ally but i really enjoyed it it's historical fiction/spy intrigue novel/eastern philosophy
