Sacred Harp Singings

I'll be going to the huge, glorious Western Massachusetts Sacred Harp Convention this Saturday, and I'm also planning to attend the Vermont singing at the end of the month, at which we'll sing out of the Northern Harmony book (oh, goody!) as well as the 1991 Sacred Harp. You're going to a Sacred Harp Convention .... and I am emerald-green with envy! I hope you'll post a report about it afterward, for all of us less-blessed lookers-on.

When I was in the graduate linguistics programs at UCSD we had a Sacred Harp group -- we called it a "shape note singing group" at the time -- and it was wonderful. I've missed it all these years.

We did a little shape-note singing in graduate school, too, but didn't really get into it (or even know about any regular singings) until our youngest two children (then 13 and 10) got enthusiastic about it through Village Harmony camp. At that point we reached critical mass, and started to travel to singings within 3 or 4 hours drive.
