one of those potpourri updates

Dec 14, 2009 22:50

Oddly enough, I had actually planned to Study today -- I snatched up a whole pile of books about books and reading and storytelling at the library, including Reading Lolita in Tehran, which is gorgeous and heartbreaking, and I meant to read them (in a skimming sort of way) and dash down notes and try to draft a narrower focus. But as fate would ( Read more... )

goodwill-fu, the astonishing adventures of me, in which i am very much a girl, books, pen in my hand, awesome magical girls: a novel, the writing life, gallimaufry, her clothing is silk and purple

Apropos of nothing, your package arrived today!! Eee, package. Am attempting to be good and have stowed wrapped parcels in the book closet, but the one with the bells had OPENED ITSELF, I SWEAR, IT WANTED TO BE FREE. ;D And OMG, SO AMAZING. I can't stop ringing them because they sound so pretty and bright! And they have made an appearance in my first Christmas song, hurray! ♥

Oh sure, the old "but it opened itself!" story... ;-)

Sounds like it was fate, though! And I'm so glad you like the bells!!

domestic high fantasy, in which the stakes are personally high, but it isn't the same old thing with Dark Lords and Only You Can Save The Entire Universe

I haven't read Chalice yet (it is sitting on my bookshelf, waiting for me to have a guilt-free break), but there should be more books in that category. It's one of the things I like about Patricia McKillip's books aside from the Riddlemaster books (not that I don't love those as well, but they are fairly Only You Can Save the Entire Universe, or At Least This Particular Bit of It). And, well, I have no skills in that department anyway; all my stories come out small and personal, even if I didn't intend them that way in the first place.

Bwaaaaah, I have the same problem re. writing Big Things, except that my stories always turn out to be fairy complex, which is part of the reason it takes years to finish them. *facepalm* Also they want to have ACTION. I can't THINK action, much less write it.

And yes, I especially get excited seeing high fantasy with less of the epic high stakes, because I'm curious about what goes on in the world when a hero isn't saving it from annihilation. I wonder what sort of common plots could be transposed to a high fantasy setting?

Ha ha, "action." One time I wrote a fairly long story and gave it to a friend to read, and halfway through, on the bottom of the page, he wrote, "Hey, look--a plot!" Which...was not inaccurate. Prior to that, it was mostly random conversations and intimations of family secrets that were really obvious if you thought about it for two seconds. And even the "plot" turned out to be more of a change of location than anything else. :) Ah well.

This comment isn't related to anything, but -- I've followed you here from quite a number of mutual friends, and you seem to be all sorts of awesome, so would you mind terribly if I friended you? :)

... if it was Awesome Magically Awesome Girls, then yes. :D Most of the mangas I read, the titles make no sense at all. Like, what could D.Gray-man actually mean? :s

Hey, if people want them, no reason to hold the clothes back even if they are unattractive. That's an awesome little business. ^_^ A Robin McKinley book I haven't read - this trend is occurring far too often. Must get back to my preteen roots where I raided her section of the library weekly.

I really adore those names. ♥ Wow this comment is entirely roundabout. heh.

Also, I'd love to send you a Christmas card, and you don't have to feel obligated to acquiesce or send me one or anything. ♥

Robin McKinley's Chalice (I love this book for the mere fact that it is high fantasy, but domestic high fantasy, in which the stakes are personally high, but it isn't the same old thing with Dark Lords and Only You Can Save The Entire Universe. Also for the mere fact that it is Robin McKinley

... hang on is this a recent thing?! 'cause I have not heard of it, and now I am excited! :)
