Ahab's Wife

I just finished Ahab's Wife by Sena Jeter Naslund for book club tomorrow night.  It kept me interested--even though I'm not into sea stories.  The main character is the wife of Captain Ahab of Moby Dick.  It starts with a very interesting sentence, "Ahab was neither my first husband nor my last...".  Apparently, the author had that thought pop into ( Read more... )

There have been quite a few reliable historical accounts of women at sea disguised as young men - a bit tricky, maybe, but not as impossible as you might think!

I get that she could have been on the whaling ship without being detected, but after their ship sinks, they wind up on a whale boat with only 10 other people--all of whom are in very close proximity to each other. The character supposedly waited until after dark for her friends to help hoist her over the side to relieve herself.

I guess its possible, but I'd sure have a hard time concealing my gender!
