On The Subject Of Crossovers

OK, so, before I start, a minor bit of comm-pimping. I'm trying to jump-start my dead comm, inception_meta, and with that in mind just posted a new discussion topic over there, so anyone interested please go check it out!

Ahem. On to the topic at hand. This is also a meta of sorts, but a more general fanfiction writing one as opposed to one for a specific fandom ( Read more... )

I'm trying to remember whether I ever did a (serious) crossover. I don't think so. And that's a shame.

But, yeah, for me the appeal of crossovers is in finding worlds that just work together without changing anything/too much about one canon. Just like you described it. Of course it's interesting to see beloved characters react in situations that are unthinkable for their world but I really, really like universes to make sense (well, continuity-sense, not 'I'm an engineer, I want my physical laws obeyed in science fiction'-sense). I just love it when canon events still make sense when crossed with a different fandom.

Basically: I really enjoy your approach and usually avoid crossover fic that is handled differently. I'm not a big fan of crossovers that just exist to pair characters up. - Although I suppose those can be done well, too, so maybe I should... Hey, this is an interesting topic, I never paied much attention to the possibilities of crossovers, so thank you for bringing it up. :)

That being said, I absolutely have to read ( ... )

I'm generally not a fan of cross-canon shipping, I'll admit it. Nothing against it, per se, but I'm just not that into it unless the characters really work together.

My pet peeve, for some reason is Harry Potter/Star Wars crossover. I cannot figure out any way those two things could work together that isn't either intentionally cracky or just not good. But it's still popular. (Of course, if someone could give me a link to an exception, I'd read it happily as I'm a fan of both.)

My entire crossover series (AMTBR) is in my masterlist. :) When you have time.

I'm not a fan either. But that may be because I never saw a pairing that made sense to me, so... Yeah, benefit of the doubt. But I don't tend to try my luck on this one.

Harry Potter/Star Wars? Wow, that's just... I'm actually glad I never came across that one. I can't see a way to make that work. (Although, if somebody could pull it off, I'd read the hell out of it.)

I really, really need to stop being such a lazy reader. - I already love the summaries to pieces. And of course I'm amazed how you manage to roll so many fandoms into one. So... no time at the moment (and in the next decades, probably), but I'm really looking forward to reading it. Also, I'm a horrible suck-up. ;)
And looking back on my last comment and knowing myself: I'm really sorry for this pseudo-English mess. *drop*

You know, just to try to shock it back to life I'm going to try to write my worldbuilding/gen sort of cookbook for Inception fic, in that comm.

(And probably more meta stuff since I think about it all the time.)
