That's actually a good point. I think during First Class the general public isn't yet aware of mutants, so the not-yet X-Men mostly hide. In the time period of the later movies, they probably do more than we see. Comics are about action, so I guess they skip the militant stuff, I don't really know.

Still, a throwaway comment about it would be nice, y'know? FC period, I get keeping quiet, but the later films? Not so much.

I hope there is more that they just ignore, but based purely on what we see - and it's not mentioned in passing for the X1 or X3 novelizations either - there isn't, and it kinda bothers me.

I think there's a couple of key points here that speak to Xavier's outreach and point of view. Even just from the films, though I mentally fill in some of the comics information by force of habit.

First, by the end of X2 Xavier has not only specifically shown his face (albeit in a rather threatening way) to the President of the United States, he has shown his whole hand with regard to "mutants live among you, you can work with us or expect a war." That's pretty baller, when it comes to laying out his opinion. He's basically saying--you can either declare this war, and Magneto is going to be your combatant, or you can work with me and we can see if there's a different path.

And of course, by X3 the subsequent President has taken that message to heart. Hank McCoy, who ranks up there with Nightcrawler and Mystique as super obvious mutants, is a member of the President's cabinet. Despite weaponizing the de-mutanizing serum, he first talks about it as an optional choice, an option that stays and option despite clear attacks on Federal ( ... )

Thanks, seriously. You're looking at it from a different angle than I did, and I really appreciate it. I really posted this hoping someone would tell me what I missed and you did just that. I admit, this has a lot to do with my brainstorming thing.

The X3 examples were especially appreciated - I haven't seen it in years, mostly because as an overall film I didn't like it very much.
