Hanukkah versus Christmas, by a bad half-Jew

I grew up with a Jewish mother and a Roman Catholic father, both somewhat jaded by their respective religions by the time children began appearing in their household (first me, then my brother, and finally my sister).  My mother insists on our Judaism, and my brother even had a Bar Mitzvah forced upon him.  Meanwhile, I prefer a more agnostic route ( Read more... )

i love how this is written...but mostly the image of you as a ten-year-old [and i have no idea what that actually looks like], politely excusing yourself to stand in the bathroom "bemused by this new information." that's such a mature way of dealing with the fact that you once believed in a fat fuck in a red suit visiting your house once a year with presents. it's all adult and cute at once.

and now i will stop critiquing your life.

...but on a side note, i don't think i ever actually believed in any of it. i have always enjoyed the ritualistic things more [like when my dad spreads incense around the house on our serbian orthodox patron saint day], and the easter bunny and santa had handwriting that was strikingly similar to my mom's. and they had the same sense of humor, too.

...who the hell was she trying to fool?!
