The column on the right shows a number, which is the opacity. There's also a drop-down menu which says "Normal" by default; you can select different blend modes from that.
Another way is to double-click on the name of the layer on the Layers Palette (Raster 1, Background, etc). Blend modes and opacities are under the "General" tab.
