I'm glad you like them! And it's not too late to become a Xenaphile, you know. :-) I converted B. when the series was almost over. The blue Gabrielle one was an expression of my mood at the time, but I'll post about that later.
Thanks! Xena really is worth watching as a cultural phenomenon. It's funny in a self-aware sort of way, it has a strong female character as the hero, and it had a lesbian subtext that was very very close to maintext; some might argue it *became* maintext. I think BTVS went much farther than Xena did, but at the time Xena was on the air, the idea of a relationships b/t Xena and Gabrielle was *extremely* controversial, hard as it might be to believe. It deals with a lot of interesting issues and has strong dramatic story arcs as well as hilarious episodes. If you ever decide you want to watch it, you need to watch the "Xena trilogy" on "Hercules the Legendary Journeys" first, which introduced Xena's character and led to the spinoff show.
I definitely like strong female characters (see my Nikita love...), but I usually prefer more serious dramas than what I perceive Xena to be. I've always seen it as a more campy drama. Who knows, I could like it... If ever I have a lull in my television viewing, I might check it out. Is is on DVD, or in repeats in syndication?
Xena had a lot of campy aspects to it, including a complete disrespect to historical time. But it also had very serious story arcs that created rifts in the relationship b/t Xena and Gabrielle and examined their very philosophical differences. There was also the question of the possibility of Xena's dark side re-emerging (kind of like on Angel) and issues of Xena's responsibility for deeds she did in her dark past. Usually the campy, self-aware episodes are separate from the serious ones, unlike Buffy which always seemed to blend the humor and the drama really seamlesslly.
Yes, it's all out on DVD, and you can rent Hercules Season 1 to watch the three Xena episodes there first. When I first happened to catch my kids watching Xena, I thought, "Oh, scantily clad chicks having chick fights," but I got caught up in the episode, and Xena makes a decision that is really questionable and haunts her later. And I was hooked. And as to the scantily -clad chicks, Hercules was an equal opportunity eye candy series. :-) Even Herc got
