Summary: She could have loved Faith if she had tried but the truth was that she didn’t want to try.
Truth
When Faith came into her life, Buffy knew that she could have loved the brunette Slayer if she had tried but the truth was that she didn’t want to try. She was angry that Faith seemed to be able to dazzle her friends, her family, and her Watcher. Wherever Faith went, all eyes were on her and it made Buffy jealous. It was the former cheerleader who had been one of the Queens at her old high school coming out after being repressed for so long that had made her reject Faith and turn from the brunette Slayer when she needed someone to be gentle with her.
Lies
By the time that Buffy realized that she could have saved Faith, it was too late. There were too many lies between them. Not to mention the jealous, the anger and the hatred that stood between them. She didn’t admit it to anyone but herself that Faith’s descent into evil was her fault, because she knew that her friends and her Watcher would dismiss the idea. They didn’t know what it had been like when it had just been her and Faith, when Faith had dropped her defenses and Buffy had turned from her. Buffy knew that she had helped to make Faith into the monster that she had become and it shamed her more than anything else.
