Author's note: This is for chiachiaamichan, who requested InuiKaidoh, dorkiness, and cute small animals. This is kind of lame, sorry! I hope you enjoy it anyway.

They stared at it in silence for a moment before Inui spoke.

"It's a bird."

Thank you, captain obvious, but Kaidoh didn't say that, didn't say anything. He knelt down, looking at the tiny thing, which squawked once pathetically before laying still. It was smaller than Kaidoh's palm, tan and fluffy, not yet having grown feathers, obviously unable to fly. It was adorable and piteous; Kaidoh bit back the strong desire to reach out and touch it. How this thing ended up stranded on the tennis courts was beyond him, but he wanted to help it, return it home. Looking back up at Inui, he asked, "What do we do?"

"Don't touch it," Inui responded matter-of-factly, adjusting his glasses on his nose. "If the mother can tell humans have touched it, she'll abandon it."

Kaidoh nodded and accepted Inui as the authority; he was Inui, after all, he knew everything. He gazed at the bird, watched as it struggled to right itself, failed, and fell back onto its side, twitching and squeaking again. It was painful to see; the poor thing was just a child, it shouldn't have to suffer this way. "Then what do we do?"

Inui knelt beside him, inspecting the bird for a moment. "We could find something to scoop it into, I suppose. Take it back out--" He paused, finding a snag in the plan. They had no idea where the bird came from.

Kaidoh grit his teeth; they couldn't just leave it here! Something had to be done-- but what? He didn't have any better ideas, and clenched his fist in frustration, only to be startled by a half-chuckle from Inui. "...What?"

Inui was looking at him now, a gleam across his glasses. "You and I could become its parents."

Kaidoh couldn't help it; he blushed. "W-what--?"

"We could take care of it. I'm sure we could find out how somewhere online." Inui seemed entirely serious about the prospect, and was looking at Kaidoh now, as if judging his response. Kaidoh wished he wouldn't; he was still bright red despite his attempts to fight his blush back, and Inui staring at him certainly never helped in that pursuit.

"I think you'd make an excellent mother, Kaidoh." Well, there went any chance of Kaidoh ever being able to get his face back to a normal colour. "What do you say?"

Swallowing, Kaidoh struggled for words. Inui always did this to him; somehow, whatever Inui said was just the wrong thing for Kaidoh to wrack up the nerve to respond how he wanted to. Yes, he wanted to say, tried to say, was about to say--

"Oh, you found a baby bird? I know of a bird shelter." Kaidoh looked up, still blushing, to see Oishi looking down at them. "I can take it there, if you want. I know they'll look after it." He was smiling so congenially, Kaidoh couldn't exactly say no, but-- it was just-- Inui had--

Oishi was really very confused when Kaidoh stood abruptly and ran off with a hiss, but dutifully collected the baby bird in a cardboard box as Inui continued to sit, scribbling away in his notebook.
