It reminded her of Nibelheim. And that was enough for Tifa to panic, if only for a moment. Because as much as she had tried to put it behind her -- as much as they had promised to move forward instead of dwelling in the past -- there was still a part of that day that remained with her. That would always remain with her. It was the day her father died, after all. And the day that everything she ever knew or ever believed died along with him.

She could never forget that day, the first of many that would always stay with her.

Tifa had committed a felony, they had told her. And this was to be her punishment until such time that her suffering equated the severity of the crime. And that was all the information they felt inclined to give, nothing on what was done to send her here. No distinct time in which she would stay. But considering details of just where she was and the level of security given to the facility (and the planet for that matter), the young woman could only guess at which incident in her life led her to be brought here.

It wasn't as if Jill had to be told. Even in self-defense, even under orders, there were always those who saw killing as murder: a black-and-white, unforgivable crime no matter what the circumstances. She understood that way of thinking, even if she disagreed ( ... )

From the first moments of waking up in the prison, Tifa had known that there had been a restriction on her strength. The disappearance of her Materia store only furthered that belief, though it was understandable. High maximum security facility or not, the guards weren't invincible. All the same, even without her own strength or help from the glowing orbs, the young woman still had her honed and trained instincts to rely on, as well as her quick reflexes.

Try as you might, Tifa's learned to live every day of her life with caution. There'll be no sneaking up on this girl.

With a seemingly effortless turn, the former barmaid moved just enough to catch the arm aimed at her back. And with a strong grip, she proceeded to flip the mystery attacker over her shoulder and towards the far end of the scaffold. When someone moves to strike against you, it was better to react and ask questions later. You stay alive longer that way.

One thing she had learned since arriving: the people here were unlike any other Tifa had ever come across. And that included a tough skin that made them harder to disable (because she was neither here to fight nor kill, but one at least could be avoided). Most of them were born and trained fighters, just like her. And each one of them seemed intent on picking a fight on a daily basis, it seemed. And with every hour brought more opportunity for Tifa to expand on her martial arts skills in order to stay alive and relatively bruise free ( ... )

Fists, not open hands; the way she balanced herself, held her stance, her quick defensive reaction before -- there was an 82% chance this was a fighter trained extensively in close-quarters combat, specifically specialized in both upper and lower body strength. This suggested that the chance of her attacking first was low ( ... )

The target was fast. Faster than estimated, only assisted in part by the limit on Jill's own abilities. This was an unusual case.

She dug a heel into the floor to brake, following the younger woman's movements with a quick eye and instantly deducing the intention behind that attack--

The P30 virus was not capable of emotion. It was only what Wesker told it to be, and while that left room for certain quirks, as it were, it possessed no personality. It did not think beyond the boundaries he defined and it did not feel anything that was not physical or the simplest of psychological reactions -- surprise being one ( ... )

It wasn't until she got to Midgar and she had been employed at the original Seventh Heaven Bar that her skills really started to come in handy. But it seemed like Tifa had been fighting all her life. Recent years pitted her against monsters and remnants and Deepground soldiers for the sake of saving the world. And during times of peace, she was fighting off unruly patrons who frequented her bar. She had been fighting conventions and influences by befriending Cloud. And she had been fighting death itself since she was eight ( ... )

Speech was actually something Jill rarely utilized. She used words to acknowledge her orders, but even then that was few and far in-between; she and Wesker had established an unspoken method of communication, a language consisting of subtle body language and an anticipatory understanding of his general character and desires. More frequently, she used her voice for reports and occasional messages, but even more than that were the terse threats and directions she gave to those below even her.

Ricardo Irving, for example.

In short, Jill didn't open her mouth unless otherwise directed. As it was, this young woman's inquiry fell on deaf ears; Jill possessed no current obligation to answer.

Using that brief pause during the other's question, Jill recovered easily enough, making eye contact in a blank stare as her senses instantly took in everything else

But balance was something Tifa had plenty of, in spades when there wasn't an extra weight to contend with. That, coupled with split-second reaction time, made for a fairly good and interesting opponent. However, the other's presence slanted her calculations a bit, and she was left in an almost constant backtrack of steps to keep from falling. Being on your back and on the ground was a bad place to be for a fighter. And it was no loss to her that the other was getting better at blasting through her guard kicking and scratching. If not for the immediate alarm that screamed through her head and senses the moment she felt the woman's hard grip on her shoulders, she would have never been able to take those few necessary steps to keep on her feet and the least bit in control of where her body would go ( ... )

There was a brief, startled cry as Jill lost her balance, her footing, her bearings, and for an instant everything was impossibly out of her control -- and then muscles launched, instincts reacted, and one strong hand seized the railing to catch herself, granted only by the hold on the front of her suit at the last second.

She didn't wonder at the turn of events -- there was no change of feeling or intention in the virus's protocol, but it wasn't stupid, either. The most logical course of action for optimal self-preservation and continuation of her mission was to accept the assistance. She gripped the railing with her other hand as well and hoisted, pulling herself up, ignoring how the pressure on her suit had caused the zipper to slip down another couple inches, further revealing the mechanism on her chest.
