There are some Nora Roberts novels that are completely worthless and some that are really good. You did pick some of the worthless ones - I've read just about all of them.

I read trashy romance all the time. It's brainless and formulaic, yes. But it also works really well as an escape for me.

Anyway, if you want to try her again ever, I will recommend some to you so you don't have to pick randomly.

I'm a secret reader (okay, not so secret anymore, I guess) of romance novels. But I don't care much for Nora Roberts, although, I confess, I've only read a handful of hers, but that handful does include that key trilogy dara mentions below. Yes, it's brainless and formulaic most of the time. But most writing is formulaic in someway, and brainless is what I usually want to be when I'm reading them. Don't read them when you want to be intellectually stimulated! My favorite authors in the romance genre are Julia Quinn and Eloisa James, both of whom have some brain cells firing, I think. Eloisa James has some really well fleshed-out secondary characters, and Julia Quinn has some very funny, witty moments.

I started reading romances again when I was working on my dissertation which was on a feminism-related topic. I found the juxtaposition of reading feminist theologians and romance novels kept me from going insane. :)
