Well, marijuana is the next common vice that was outlawed after alcohol, and it is still currently illegal. I think prohibition of marijuana will be overturned probably at least within the next 50 years or so. Oh and by the way, at the time of prohibition of alcohol marijuana was still legal. Not entirely accurate. Although marijuana wasn't outlawed federally until 1937, most states had laws in place banning it by then. Prohibition was a socio-political movement that developed in the first few decades of the 20th century. The biggest differences between the ways it was applied to alcohol and drugs were the scope of the population that the laws affected, the legal methodologies used to implement them, and of course - their longevity. National alcohol prohibition went away 75 years ago. Drug prohibition did not. The legacy of the Temperance movement is the legitimacy of the power of the state to have authority over these matters.

Actually, there is federal regulation of Marijuana, under the aegis of the interstate commerce act, and the DEA often makes arrests of individuals participating in Medical Marijuana programs that are legal under state law, but not under federal law.

Also my main point in the response is that I think marijuana is the next thing to be legalized, and I doubt there will be another national prohibition of any popular substance. And also that it's fucked up that the FDA approves and regulates the consumption of synthetic opiates and amphetamines, which are clearly horrible substances.
