Most graduate departments offer some kind of support to grad students, although certainly not as much as they used to. Your best bet at getting such support is a) doing really well on the GRE b) applying early and c) writing a kickass application essay that shows how you would be an asset to their dept.
And nothing wrong with applying to several different institutions and making the decision based on the amount of aid you are offered.
Outright grants are not that common, but teaching/research assistantships are.
I think it's a great idea and that you should go for it.
