Some day i will visit Immaculate Conception. I've described it, and recommended it tourists, on the Metro, as it's visible from the Red Line near Michigan Ave station. I'm told it's most exquisite there. Tourists are always confused that it's a Basilica, and not a cathedral. They're even more baffled when you tell them that the Catholic Cathedral is in Baltimore.

Thanks for sharing this lovely picture.

the Catholic Cathedral is in Baltimore

Only the oldest one in the US... and it too is a basilica (Assumption BVM, as opposed to the Immaculate Conception Basilica in DC). Every diocese has a cathedral. The major confusion in DC is because of National Cathedral which is Episcopalian. The cathedral parish for the RC Archdiocese of Washington is St. Matthew the Apostle on Rhode Island Ave.

I'd plumb forgotten about St. Matthew the Apostle, and i spent years attending musical performances there. Thank you for the reminder. :)

I really should get down there sometime this month and pick up a few things at the gift store. hmm...maybe time to call Mom and drag her along....

There are so many beautiful pieces of art both at the Basilica and at the National Cathedral. Despite being Catholic, I end up at the National Cathedral a lot because a) it's a mile and a half from my parents house and b) They have the most gorgeous garden ever.

yes, and dear god the traffic... I was in Philadelphia for John Paul II's visit in 1979, and the crowds were immense then. (My high school band had been picked as the official diocesan representative organization for the visit. Which simply meant we got to set up and play about 50 feet away from the crowd-control line.)

i am always amazed byt the merging of so many different symbols throughout the different faiths. the closer we look the more relationships are seen. some are direct, some re just human experiences we all share.

it is a beautiful shot.
art makes you feel something, not the same as another person, and not for the same reason. sometimes it is a total lack of emotion, empty, is the feeling. this is a beautiful sculpture, a great picture, not necessarly a masterpiece in the creation of the madonna figure but the whle piece is quite striking.
thank you for sharing.

i don't think i have ever been to the basilica, if i was i must have been very young, so i had never seen THIS statue before. it was a beautiful statue.. but also very different.... and the photo i think enhances it.
it looks very oriental to me....
