SCA: choosing a persona

Apr 10, 2007 19:28

When people first start getting involved in the SCA they often agonize over choosing a persona, so i decided to post the advice i have given every other time i have been asked "how do i choose a persona"

First of all, don't.
seriously.. you don't have enough experience with the SCA to know what you want yet, so unless you have always had a mad ( Read more... )

I totally joined when I was 17 IN ORDER to play dress-up. All the rest was secondary. I was a novice seamstress, so I went early period, but the second gown I made was of emerald green silk, albeit in a modified T-tunic shape. At first I had it edged with silver trim, but it later acquired a collar and cuffs of white fur (REAL fur, and not rabbit either) when I got my hands on a thrift store fur jacket to cannibalize.

The dancing and the cooking came later.

I still play dress-up, just not in the SCA any more.

Very useful, thank you. We're always debating joining SCA, but haven't really any idea how to do so and whether or not we can make the financial commitment to do so.

I tried to cook wearing a cloak once. *wince* Learned my lesson pretty quickly after that.

try a hood. its like a cloak that stops just over your shoulders... cheap to make, takes about 1 yard of fabric, so you can use the GOOd stuff and not cost an arm and a leg. they dont fall in the cook pots, the fire, OR the port a johns....

as to the SCA?
most local groups have what they call "Gold Key" where you can borrow garb while you figure out what to do...
but a couple of basic T Tunics (so called because they are shaped like a T. or more likely like a snow angel) wil get you through several events. i still have a bunch of old T Tunics, and that is basically what my husband wears. just better T Tunics with more trim.

like most hobbies, it CAN be expensive, but doesnt need to be.
email me, i have cheap pattern links/patterns.....but look up "T Tunic" or "SCA garb patterns" in google and keep looking until you find something that you understand.....

Sure, I'd love those. I have a ton of pagan costumes from the various festivals we've attended and I'm a fairly decent seamstriss (hems, hems are my bane). Josh makes chainmail, so there's always options there.

I have cloaks with sleeves, much more practical!

Hey yo! I work with an SCA guy and I asked if he knows you. He dosen't, but today he said that you tried to join their LJ group. He wanted me to pass along that denying you was nothing against you, and that particular group only exists for members of his tribe.

Funny coincendence. He is in M's old tribe.

I wear Elizabethan exclusively and I have no problems getting around in it or washing it. Pretty comfortable actually-I went with middle class-skirts up off the ground, don't have to wear a corset, I boned my bodice. I like the partelet, discovered it keeps the sun off your neck. I also like wooden Dutch clogs, an apron, and the flat crowned hat. The Heidi braids (wrapped around the head) are great for pinning that hat on too. Better than modern clothes for camping and such. The ticks have a difficult time figuring out how to get in! I pick them off my knees, hee hee.

I like exploratory archeology.

see? thats what i mean by individual differences.
i had a boned bodice and plain skirts basic middle class Tudor.. and other than the linen head coif (which i adored) it was not something i could work in.
but my sidelss and gown are longer.... so you would think it would be more trouble..
but for me, it isnt.

ugh. ticks. the bane of my exsistance right up there with mosquitos. they think i am tasty.

funny, i thought i was approved? oh well..
yeah i am friends with tons of them.

most of the SCA folk who know me know me from the east coast... but if he goes to Pennsic he might know me.. but he will only know me as Fabric Dragon, the lady with the beads and embroidery stuff.

i sell a lot of silk thread to the tribe for their cords...
one of my chief minions is in the tribe, (of course so are most of my best friends, and the merchant aide)
