Take the biggest towel you have or a sheet, fold it longwise and have her wrap that from back to front with the ends crossing in front. When she coughs, she can pull that snug and it will help give support to her ribs.
It's an old respiratory therapy trick from an old respiratory therapist.
This is *not* in lieu of seeking local medical care. If it's been going on this long, the chances of it becoming something long and chronic [or once again long and chronic] is way to high.
Been my experience that if it hurts a lot to cough, folks either try not to cough at all [impossible] or hold it until it simply erupts. If you know you've got some sort of support, you're more likely to relax into a cough and not run the risk of pulling muscles, etc.
i'm thirding the call for medical intervention at this point.
even if she hasnt rebroken a rib (yes, its absolutely possible to break a rib coughing, i broke one while *ahem* making with the pouncidies, for goodness' sake!) she needs to have some decent cough syrup in her to calm the cough, and perhaps a muscle relaxant for the muscle spasms. those boogers are just TERRIBLE.
She needs to go to the ER if she is coughing non stop it could be because she can't breathe. and I dunno about you but I tell folks I'm addicted to breathing. It keeps me alive.
PLEASE take her to the ER. They are required to help you, and there are programs that can help you get health care for folks who have low income. The hospitals have social workers who help with that stuff. Please take care of her and yourself.
the coughing faded off not too long after the post, i dunno if the double dose of cough suppresant or the doble dose of knock out sedatives did it. i am still coughing too much trying to get back to the doctor
If you are not already at the emergency room, PLEASE GO. That is why we pay taxes, so people can have help and not be turned away.
I am getting seriously worried myself.
Take the dog to her parents' house if you can't leave the dog by itself . . . maybe that is where you should both go after the ER anyway, so that there is someone else who can help evaluate what the heck is going on.
There is this awful respiratory stuff going around, and my mom's cousin went to the ER "almost too late" with it--they told her that her throat was so irritated that she was having asthma attacks as well as the infection. They almost put her into the hospital. They said they wished she had come earlier in the day. So . . . a word to the wise!
