yup. i knew she needed recall work.. becausae there are so few opportunities to practice here...
what i didnt expect was how GREAT she would be in the restaurant. man oh man... pro all the way.
sadsly the event wasnt that good. given the 2.5 hour drive each way, gas costs, tolls, and trolling in? plus food? i think we lost money.... pity we may have broken even, just. ah well.
i'd say "homey" rather than "homely" so that's cool. :)
and yes, there are some things that shadow does better than other things, too. being quiet is easy for her, as is being good in her dog-bag. being good in the crate in the car, not so much. (she whimpers)
but after more than 10 months, its really cool to see her having fun and playing with her toys. i honestly wondered if she was ever going to do that.
Yeah, that is what Cora does... she's not running away, she's just "I wanna runrunrunrunrunaround!!" and sometimes she gets the crazies and just runs amok within a ten foot circle of me, dancing and puppy bowing... but not letting me grab her. :P I quit trying, and it didn't change anything- she's not running away, just trying desperately to coax me into energetic play!
I am planning on buying a 'long leash' (like 20 foot) so we can both train her on that recall thing, AND so she can be allowed to /play/ like that when she wants to, and I just do NOT have the energy to play with her!
we are lookijng for a long leash also... i just am concerned that with her mass if she got up any speed and hit the end of that leash.. wham. so most of the work will HAVE to be in fenced areas.
Yep. Same here- I usually 'work' the leash a little, meaning I hold it like you would when lunging a horse- make sure she FEELS the 'tugtug' of the 'end' long before it IS the end... holding a few (LOOSE!) loops and tugging on a knot (or knots) tied further down.
You can also tie a 'brake' into it, either a mechanical one (from a climbing shop) or a physical knotwork one, which will slow her down and cause drag BEFORE the end runs out!
I've trained enough BIG animals to know not to let even a mid-size one take me for a drag!!

You got some things to add to the training list (return when called), and things that don't need as much work (some restaurant behavior).
I hope the event was profitable.

May the heater be fixed soon.
I'm glad your restaurant experience was excellent; Bella sounds like a pro.

i may have to enquire at a REI about a brake, just because i am not sure how well i would do it by hand....
