report that idiot. seriously. the police may not DO anything, but having the report on file will protect you should you have to do anything about the waste of air.

Unless you have the time (and the money) to practice shooting regularly, you probably want something like mace or pepper spray instead. You may also need a carry-permit to have those, depending on your local laws.

time i have. money is an issue. i do have friends who can help out but yes its why i do not ALREADY have a gun.

mace is illegal in my city. period
peper spray? sorry, stuff is useless and often more dangerous to the weilder.. it also tends to tag a HUGE area, so using it for home defense ? you just annoyed the bad guy, blinded yourself, and hurt the animals and civilians. (yes i am not a fan of pepper spray lol)

i will likely start by getting a shotgun. sigh. where i will get the $$$ i dont know, but will look around. i may be able to find a pistol for less, in which case i will get that.

still on tranquilizers, so forgive my typing

Why the hell would he threaten you or your dog? Or is this someone who just threatens people for no reason?

Shotguns require no permit, but you probably can't walk around with it.

You don't want a cheap gun, either, unless someone who KNOWS guns has gone over it and given it a thumbs-up.

If you DO get a gun, I reiterate the need for practice, practice, practice -- and figuring out how you'll carry it such that it can be brought into play quickly.

i am rather fond of the bra holsters....
they seem to combine the concealment with a fairly rapid ability to reach it in a pinch, with less concern that your gun can be snatched if its in your purse...

i am debating shotgun or pistol. i can probably scrounge the $$$ for one or the other but not both, so .. debate.

why? pick one.. he is afraid of my dog and that makes him angry, i am a girl and that makes him angry.. i am a girl with a big dog and THAT makes him angry.. i am a HANDICAPPED girl handling a dog he is scared of..
i am a white chick with a dog he is scared of?
i dunno
could be any of the above or none. this neighborhood is not safe.

I know someone else who taught her own dog to do stability work. Should I see if she's willing/able to be in touch?

o_O

I don't even know where to start with the wrongness of that last paragraph... It sucks that that might be the best way for you to feel safe walking around near your home :-/

When I was a teen and looking for a lost cat, I ended up having a slightly odd conversation where a guy came over to see what I was calling the cat at night in the local park, stopping about 12 feet away from me, we chatted for a minute or two about pets, then he asked if I wasn't scared. I asked why, and he reached into his pocket and said "for all you know, I have a knife in my pocket" so I reached into my handbag and said "for all you know, I have a gun in my bag". He conceded that I might do, wished me luck finding my cat, and left. It didn't occur to me for a day or so that he might have actually had a knife..!

yeah...

he probably did. he was probably sizing you up as a victim, no way to know.

i am comfortable with guns, or i was.. i was in teh army. i just honestly didnt think i would need to get one for..defense? i thought about it before, but the prior threats have been property not life.
shrug
nothing a gun can do about idiots with spray paint, after all.. or car tires.
but when it comes to life threats? uh.... i am no longer capable (i once was) of taking down an unarmed attacker without a weapon...

Yeah, that's kinda what I've concluded over time. Even if he didn't - people who make good judgement calls probably wouldn't ask a stranger that (especially not in a deserted area, at night) - and people who make poor judgement calls can be unsafe to be around... I'm just quite glad my initial reaction was instant, calm, and successfully blagged my way out of trouble!

At least that means that, should you ever need to pull a gun on somebody, it will be a way for you to gain/maintain control of a dangerous situation, rather than a cue for the situation to escalate? But hopefully it won't come to that, and all it will mean is that you know that you'll be able to defend yourself, Bella, and anybody else with you.
