I am a math dunce (which is funny because my mother's a statistician), but I got an A in my one college math course because of my professor...a tiny bit of a woman maybe 5ft tall, with long gray hair down past her waist, and she wore only old jeans, used vaguely rough language, and on the first day of class she said, quote, "I went to school in California in the 60s...yes, I was a hippie, no, I didn't go to Woodstock, yes, I smoked some pot back then, no, I don't smoke pot now and no, I don't make special brownies."
I wrote that down word for word because I thought that was the best 1st day speech I'd ever heard.
She was also one of the most brilliant teachers I ever had.
i had to re do some of the problems in the midterm a few times, not because i didnt "get" the concept, but because the graphs got me confused, or i did the plus/minus wrong... but i just re did it until i was certain and i got an A.
but i had the confidence to re do it, not just sit and start crying, because i knew i had done it in class, and the teacher had it very clear, so i could calmly figure it was a "arithmatic" issue (which it was) and look at my additions, or my writing... being sure that the FORM was ok.
I wasn't good at math and had to re-take grade 12 math/Math 30. I passed the first time but just barely and had to boost my mark to receive a better chance to get into the program I wanted. The second time I had an excellent teacher. He would tell us the most bizarre stories and crack crazy jokes. Really kept everyone's attention. The kids who misbehaved (they were entirely different and hard to control when subs went to the class) actually listened to and respected him. He was amazing and I believe he could have taught any class and I'd have paid attention and done well in it. :)
