My father had a couple of hives. There's almost nothing to it. But don't try it in suburbia, the neighbors will be up in arms.

---have you got a roof?
You Can put a hive on a roof-top, most folks wont see it. I know one that is wrapped with fake-brick, to make a mock chimney.

(or a funky old ice-chest--would help with the cold..??)

Amber.
Bees.
Beads.
Birds.
Books
Cats.
Dragon Eggs.
Dragons.
Fabric.
Jet
Wayne.

And that's just a partial list, just off the top of my head.

Kirsten, what you don't collect - if anything - would make a much shorter list....

:)

I love honeybees. When I was a kid, we kept two hives and several wild ones. You don't need gear as long as you stay calm. The only times I got stung were when they got trapped in my hair. Put it back and braid. If it's too short to put back, wet it down and you won't have problems. You don't have problems with the Africanized yet. My heart melts every time I see a bumblebee. They are such fascinating little critters. They really are "busy as a bee."

My folks aren't beekeepers but they host a couple hives for a family that live in the city. Maybe you could check into something like that?

Since you have the urge to grow things but don't have enough yard or sun, then perhaps you should grow edible mushrooms? You can buy kits to help you start them. Here are some websites I have found, but have never done business with them, so I don't know how they are.

i will have to look into that.
i actually EAT mushrooms, as oppsed to many of the other vegetables i could grow....
but i also live in mushroom farm central, so its hard on the economic justification....
still.. my orchids give me some fun
