our heating system is in desperate need of plumbing repair.  among other things it over pressures and then dumps water... which costs money. PLUS that means that at random intervals it makes horrid banging noises as the ( Read more... )

I'm on 12,000 IU of D every day, and Kirsten is on 4,000 IU. I think we've got that covered...

I hope you feel better soon, as to the old heater...good luck. Tweak away--that's all you can do with old heaters--and pray that they keep working..... (speaking as someone living in a house with a 1955 Coleman Floor furnace as my primary heat source--I'll bet i'm probably the only one left in the neighborhood with that furnace still in my house)

I've actually been thinking about a worm composter. What kind of worms are in yours - those little red ones or the big night crawlers?

we suggest red wigglers
little red ones

one very important reason is that they LIKE to stay in the bins.. and they hate light. so all you need is to have a night light on in the room and they tend to stay put even if the bin gets a little wet or dry.

while there are reasons as a worm farmer to try to grow night crawlers, if yourvprimary goal is home composting, teh red wiggler (or apparently the brown nose, which is a red wiggler relative) is the best choice.

you can actually see some video of the bins i sell in use, with worms. in sustainable dave's webpage. i had a link a post or two back....

Poor Little (!?) German Shepherd!!! Afraid of the big bad heater...
I'm dying over here, trying to stifle the giggles at work, over the mental image of the dog trying to crawl UNDER mama.. or Mama's chair! I had a Golden Retriever that was afraid of thunder, and I was in the shower one day when a storm came through... the next thing I know- I have 80+ lbs of terrified Golden jumping INTO the shower with me as the water is running! (Especially funny as he knew that was where the "ebil BAFFS" took place, but he didn't CARE!!! He wanted to be with one of his humans!!!!)

that sounds like my baby..
thunder and loud banging noises....
he's probably about 90 mumble pounds
BIG baby.. and his HEAD doesnt fit under moma's chair.. much less the whoel dog.. but he tried real hard.

what was worse was the first time h epipes went off this morning he had been sleeping, and he sleeps sort of squooged under the futon frame..
so first he tried to jump up all scared. but he couldnt because he was part under th ebed. the the FIRST clue i have is the dog lifting th ebed on my side and banging his head into it.
scrabble scrablle
"help! the kobolds! they have me trapped!"
then
"mmmooooooooooooooooooom!" as he clambers into bed.

does he lie down quietly on the human?
no, of course not.. paw paw. whine, try to dig under mom
90 pounds of terrified GSD trying to be UNDER your pillow is not helpful.

and yes, try picturing him shaking like a leaf wedging himself between my feet attempting to be UNDER the computer desk and my chair...

big ferocious guard dog!
big scary black German shepherd
HAH!

I am sick also. Have been for eleven days now. The only thing that keeps me alive and breathing are hot toddies. They don't cure you, but they somehow keep your throat clear and calms the coughing.

Here is my "recipe":

One very hot mug of hot tea [any flavor]
One tablespoon lemon juice.
One generous overflowing tablespoon honey [any kind].
1/4 cup brandy [any kind or flavor]

Repeat as necessary.
