The US Supreme Court has just upheld the right of the State of Hawaii to sell off lands owned by the Kingdom of Hawaii, over the objections of Native Hawaiian groups who claim that the State does not have legal authority to sell these lands.

The heartening thing is that there's fairly uniform opposition to the state's position from across the board in the Hawaiian community. When you get OHA and sovereignty guys on the same side you know that there's a basic consensus in the community.

I don't know what will be planned in the way of mobilization but I'll keep you posted. After the limited legal success* against the Superferry, progressive forces should be gearing up (there's the civil union/gay marriage initiative to deal with too, that's being stalled by the same religious mobs that deep-sixed the earlier initiatives back in '93).

* although see this interesting article from the Honolulu Weekly which suggests that the Superferry may have simply been a way for the Australian company which makes these vessels to get itself noticed by the Defense Department, and get around laws designed to keep production of key military hardware in US hands. Actually there's a really good roundup site on the Superferry here.
