This book had been sitting on my desk for a LONG time, I'd bought it because of a really good critique of Horatio Alger that was excerpted from this book (thank god for the internet) that I needed for a peice I wrote on "Fear and the American Dream" about 6 months ago and last night at about 2.30 am (you know who you are, it's your fault) I finally ( Read more... )

no worries brah. Hey have you read "Yellow" by Frank Wu? (he teaches Law at Morehouse I think), I've heard good things about that book too, but have never gotten around to reading it.

Not exactly, but it's just a short hop from your idea.

This has been my solution too. I think it's really important that we start to learn each other's histories too, and not just black history (like they teach it in dribs and drabs), but I mean serious history, because I feel that the reason that we don't get together like that even when we have common interests is that we commit major faux paus based on lack of historical and cultural knowledge.

Also, I think this especially important to people building POC coalitions, and I've hoped that that would happen first before we go off and start building them with white people...Otherwise, a rather sad part of me believes that even the coalitions we build with white people will be tainted by then playing the "who has overcome the most oppression game".

right on point mila.

Maybe we should start putting together a reading list on sex_and_race. Kittikattie has a big long booklist on her blog too. I'll put up a call right now.

PS. did you get my message about your list? *pokes mila again*

thanks chree, I'm glad you liked it. I don't know if fae did, but I hope she did. it's the wierdest thing, I don't even feel like I'm the one doing the writing when I post those poems for her.
