Yes, you can change the privacy settings so no one can see your friend list. I'm unsure of the groups you're in though but you can probably hide those, too.
Yes, you definitely can hide friends list. You can also filter your posts so that certain people can't see them or only a select few can. I'm also not sure about the groups but some groups are only visible to group members so outside members can't see that you're a member of them or see your posts. Others are public groups. That would be something in settings also.
Facebook has introduced many new security features in recent years that allows you to do all of the above, and a bit more. As for groups, there are three types: open, closed, and secret. Only secret groups won't show up for anyone. No one can see who's in a closed group unless they're joined, but people can know it exists.
