Elaine's Self Saucing Chocolate Pudding

May 28, 2009 22:38

chaosmanor, who moved to insanejournal in 2007, posted a chocolate self-saucing pudding recipe in 2005 that I was clever enough to save to my hard drive. Whereupon I remember a discussion in which we talked about it overflowing in the oven and Elaine said, memorably, "I'll clean the oven when I'm dead."

The reason I am posting this now is I just made one again, and it needs to be shared. It is piss easy. I added a buttload of cinnamon to mine, so it smells great, and used a random amount of oil because I had no butter and couldn't be arsed translating the quantity to metric. And it is a chocolate self-saucing pudding: hello.

Self Saucing Chocolate Pudding

In imperial measurements because the recipe predates Australia going metric.

This gives you a cake floating in a pan of sauce.

2 oz margarine
½ cup sugar
1 cup self-raising flour
2 dessertspoons cocoa
1 egg
½ cup of milk.

Melt margarine, add to sugar, flour and cocoa. Stir in egg and milk. Put in greased baking pan.

Sift and place on top:

½ cup of sugar
2 dessertspoons of cocoa

Then gently spoon over

3 ½ cups of boiling water.

Bake for ¾ hours at 375 Fahrenheit

This is the base recipe. For my tribe, I double all the quantities. Last night, I didn’t have enough cocoa, so I replaced all the cocoa in the cake bit with melted chocolate. This recipe is really robust, I’ve mistreated it in just about any way imaginable, and it always tastes great.
