I figure this'll be a highlight-the-ones-you've-read meme soon enough (assuming it isn't already), so here's my list.

From 50 Books For An 11-Year-Old, an article by Richard Davies on ABE Books:

Seriously? The Phoenix and the Carpet but not Five Children and It? That doesn't even make any sense. Phoenix... is the second book in the series. You never recommend the second book in a series but not the first.

I am very disappointed in the creators of this list.

I haven't read them since I was about 10, but as I recall, they're quite good, if in a somewhat archaic style. As I recall, E Nesbit wrote in the early 1900s. They're some of the only novels that could legitimately be called "fantasy" before Tolkien came along, that weren't just rehashed fairy tales or mythology. There's at least one or two other books that chronicle the adventures of the same group of kids, too, though their titles escape me at the moment.

I've read The Magic World, a collection of her short stories, but that's all. Could The Phoenix and the Carpet work as a standalone book? Granted, you're right; it's still weird to have included only the second, especially when some whole series are included.
