Brought to you by the I Hate Tom Cruise department: according to IMDB (on which I was noodling around seeing if I'd watched enough Tim Burton movies to write an encyclopedia entry about him), today is Tom Cruise's birthday. Please join me in a ritual retching ( Read more... )

Cool! Sounds like an excellent opportunity to get some more author credits - do you get author copies? It gives you something heavy and imposing to throw at students ;)

You could always write some wikipedia entries first to practice, if you haven't already.
Have I mentioned how much I love wikipedia? The imdb of human knowledge :)

It's a three-volume encyclopedia, apparently, so I get to darned well barrage them... Compensation is a copy and/or and honorarium, depending on how many entries I write. Since the suggested entries are tending to make me drool with intellectual anticipation and engage all neurons as a reflex, I'm hoping it's going to be a lot of them :>.

I haven't ever written wikipedia entries, mostly because it looks addictive and I, having the self-control of a small fluffy creature, would probably never stop, thus taking even more of my energy away from the things I really should be doing, career-wise.

Woo hoo! Go you!

As an editor working at an encyclopedia publisher, I can say this: Get your submissions in on time and at the length requested, and follow any other instructions carefully. Believe me, the folks at this end will worship you.

What publisher? (Can you say?)

Cheers, Dayle

Thanks for the tips :>. I can imagine that the technical process of compiling an encyclopedia must be long, hard and bloody annoying. The press is Greenwood, which does a lot of academic stuff in the pop culture region - a lot of fantasy and sf criticism comes from them.

Am now officially not Kingdom Chronicler, and in fact just proofread the first issue from my successor. I thought of you all the way through. You have turned me into a reasonably eagle-eyed proofreader, although not aspiring to the professional heights from which you survey things :>. I still remain fundamentally unmoved by the wrong kind of dashes. Have got over the bereft part, and am now simply relieved. I'm even managing to keep the vague, unreasonable resentment under, that she's radically changed the layout and look throughout.
