My favourite World Cup1 story: one of the parents of the Toddler Horde2 yesterday was limping rather severely. His wife, in tones of miff, was recounting to all comers the source of the injury. Hubby, plus two friends (also male), allowed themselves to become (predictably) very inebriated during the World Cup. Afterwards, in celebration of our ( Read more... )

A boring game? A boring game?? it dodn't bore me, since I took the precaution of not watching it.

Well, there was always the chance it could have been a good game, in which case I could have pointed and laughed at you for missing it.

You've just caused me to spend 20 minutes researching "Nelson Mutz", btw, a process made fraught by the discovery that you probably mean "Nelson Muntz". But I feel more Simpsons-enlightened now.

Yes, Nelson Muntz.

Rugby-watching is one of the great primitive pleasures - all those incredibly strong, fit people locked in epic and frequently viscerally thrilling clash. Your mileage clearly varies :>. Also, I really wouldn't want to watch sport regularly, it retains its pleasures mostly because it's infrequent, I suspect.

Gotta agree with you about the running. Although I realised the other night, while watching an open-shirted Will Smith running in slow motion on 'Bad Boys', that I like watching pretty much any man run. Particularly sprinting. There's just something about all that muscle, power and focus that is particularly gratifying.

I definitely agree! I think it might also be the incongruity - I love watching runners generally, but rugby players are generally so huge and musclebound, it's always a pleasant shock to see how cleanly and gracefully some of them can run. Bodies at physical peak are amazing.
