Have some composure, where is your posture?

I don't know why you don't all yell at me when I get worked up like that. "ANNE YOU'RE BEING A DRAMA QUEEN," you should shout. "IT WILL BE FINE. STOP IT." Because it's always true! And this thing was a blip on the stress-dar, as far as these things go. When I start freaking out about my Honors Thesis defense, then it will be justified, but ( Read more... )

Depends on where you got the impression of him as a hard ass -- some profs are very hard and demanding if you work for them or are in their classes. If neither, then it's a free pass. Be curious to see if your opinions of him came from guys or girls. As girls in science (esp for you in a hard science like chem), there's several reactions generally: the fatherly one, which is my usual experience because my profs in college were almost all my grandparent's age. Then there's the "oh, isn't she cute trying to be a scientist" one that makes you want to kick them in the balls. then the genuinely friendly one that can also be severely confused with the one that is just a plain male dog but hides it to your face ( ... )

Well part of the impression was actual personal experience - I interviewed with him for his summer position, and he was vaguely terrifying. He wasn't overtly hostile or anything, I just was left completely unsettled. So I think what you say about him treating his own students/workers differently is probably 100% true. Interesting! Maybe I should avoid him for the upper level biochem courses, though I'm not sure i can...

I bet I'm in for a real treat as far as some professors go, being a girl in chemistry. The department here is in general pretty great, everyone's very friendly and encouraging. But oh boy, grad school, can't WAIT! /sarcasm

I actually wished my dad could be here. I would have loved that.

My presentation last summer was much more intensive - it was formal, 20 minutes, oral powerpoint presentation to a room of 25 or so people, only a few of whom I actually knew at all. I was nearly sick with apprehension then. But I pulled it off really well, I was very proud of myself :)

Ha, yeah, I am pretty awful aren't I? I don't know. I don't trust my own intelligence because I don't feel intelligent. Meh.

Thanks for putting up with me and cheerleading :) *smish*

Pictures coming soon!

I would have yelled at you if I had been ONLIIIINE. I have opened your newer post, which I AM going to read, including the entire poster presentation thingie, when I am less exhausted.

And re: inappropriate crushes on chemistry teachers? It's okay. I have one, too. My high school chemistry teacher has three kids, a crazy-ass beard/mustache combo, and a cute little stomach paunch. I may or may not be kind of a little bit in love with him... like I want to marry someone exactly like him, only about 30-40 years younger, you know? Also, you said 'frisson.' So it's totally okay. We cannot help what our bodies tell us, Anne.

I NEED to be yelled at. Sigh. Ay me.

Haha, I'm SO GLAD to hear it! But the thing is, my OLD organic teacher is even kind of HOT. Like. 20 years ago? I would have totally jumped him. One of my bosses at the library told me that when he first came to work for F&M, 15 years ago, all the girls were swooning for him, AND I TOTALLY BELIEVE IT. He's a George Clooney!!! ONly not really, but in principle!
