Though now that I've actually checked the page they're way overpriced...I could probably get you an equivalent via my own sources for half what they're quoting.

Unlikely. Costuming hats run from $70 and up. While they are expensive, they are not by far the most expensive hats I've come across. I bought one this summer for $150. And that was a deal. I don't have a quality hat in my collection cheaper than $70.

People can make their own clothes too, and it will be cheaper. But for the effort spent and the niche market mark-up of obtaining the materials, some people would rather spend the extra on getting a hat premade.
