That being said, you also might want to get in touch with this guy about climbing Mt. Fuji. He is taking a busload of people to and from Mt. Fuji around Aug 10/11. He's the guy who took me last year. He's really cool and really inexpensive! If you can get to Shizuoka station, I highly recommend it!
I don't really have experience with anything else you asked about though, sorry!
Oh, thanks so much for reminding me!! That's awesome!! :D
Unfortunately, I can't go on the 10/11. We will go shortly after that, though :)
I see you were well prepared. I don't think I can afford buying hiking shoes and there are no shoes in my size available. Getting shoes made for my feet would be horribly expensive!! :/
When are you going? If it fits in my schedule maybe I can drive us up to the 5th station. I was looking at climbing it again this year. (^_^)
Oh about the shoes, I saw people climbing in everything from Crocs to Chuck Taylors to Doc Martens. I wouldn't be surprised if someone tried to climb it in geta, lol. You'll be fine.
I can add <"a href=http://xoxokristin.blogspot.com/2009/08/climbing-mount-fuji.html">my report as well. I've since made a second attempt where we stayed at a hut between the 8th and 9th station- only to be denied the top by a typhoon at 1AM. May I ask why you don't just take a bus to Kawaguchiko 5th station? I'd go straight there, going to kawaguchiko is really quite pointless unless you want to have an onsen. The mountain hut really isn't that bad. I mean, yeah you have to sleep with a bunch of people but you'll be tired and the rest will be welcomed, trust me! My only other advice is to be well prepared for rain! And work out a lot beforehand.
I don't think there's a DIRECT bus from Nagoya(!) to the 5th Station. That's really the only reason. According to this very informative website, you'll always end up at Kawaguchi St. first if you come from Nagoya anyways

I don't know how fast you hike, but you may not be able to get to the summit by sunrise (4:30) if you leave the 8th station at 1:00. Mostly because it's a solid, slow-moving line of people.
There is NOTHING at the 9th station. It's just a boarded-up hut about to blow off the side of the mountain. The 8th station is definitely your last chance for a chair, a hot meal, or a restroom before the summit. The 8th station is much smaller than the 7th station, so you might want to consider doing your big rest at the 7th, just because you'll be more likely to find a place with an opening. It took me a little under 3 hours to get from the 5th station to the 7th station, and I'm a pretty slow hiker. (I'm borderline anemic, so I have to rest frequently or my bloodstream can't carry oxygen to my body adequately.) I didn't take any photos between sunset and sunrise, so I don't have any time stamps to help me give you an estimate for that part of the hike, sorry

Oh, I didn't know that. Thanks for the input. 7th station, huh? Sounds like a plan. Have to find out how early we would have to leave there to make it in time for the sunset, though :)
Don't underestimate altitude sickness, bring more layers than you think you'll need, and bring sunscreen for the way down.
I kind of found it humourous before that people actually brought canned oxygen for the climb, but when I was unable to make it past the 8th station I regretted not having any. A stay at one of the heated stations would probably also have been worth it just for the rest, the chance to adjust more to the altitude, and to get out of the cold. Hopefully you'll both be fine! I was the only one out of a 13-person group to not make it. :(
Oh, that sounds HORRIBLE!!!! Do you have any known health issues? I'm not sporty at all, so I'm worried :( Where can you buy those canned oxygen thingies? Are they sold at any of the stations? I'll bring sunscreen. I probably have to partly pruchase proper clothes still.
And just to add to the list, here is my take on climbing Fuji. Includes things like the importance of using the bathroom early on while it's still cheap. :)
