Online Shinkansen ticket reservation (JR West!)

Hello,

I was wondering if it's possible to reserve your Shinkansen tickets online as well. I live in Japan, so it's no reservation from overseas.
All I could find was this website in English: JR East Shinkansen reservation (but I live close to Kyushu and that's West JR, so I can't use their service!!)
There's also this website in Japanese: Eki-net

Pretty sure you can only reserve them
online for jr east, unless someone corrects me. But you can usually buy Shinkansen tickets
at a local jtb/other travel agency, maybe there's
one closer to you than the jr station? (definitely is for me)

I'm in the same boat and I'm just going to wing it and get unreserved
seats. If I have to wait or stand for a little bit I'll live.

It's not such a long distance trip, so I wouldn't mind to get unreserved seats, but if there are too many people (it's winter vacation) what will happen? I've always wondered about this. Do you know?
Like if the unreserved seats wagons are too full, what happens?
