He hasn't enrolled me into anything. They helped me enroll into NHI when I came here. From time to time I get information letters about nenkin and show it to my employer, but he says I don't need it and can throw it away. The last one he took to the city office and I don't know what he did there with it.
I'm still trying to find out what would be best to do. Once I go back to my home country I will be a person who has NEVER paid into the pension plans of my own country yet as I left Japan right after I graduated from university. Probably it would have been better to pay pension from the beginning, but if I join now then I would have to pay back 1,5 or 2 years, but without that counting for pension in my own country and as I plan to only stay 1,5-2 more years in Japan it doesn't make that much sense to make back-payments and not getting any benifits from it, right?
He's aware of the situation. He just came back from a meeting with other "school bosses" and they were apparently talking about those laws as well. As far as he understood it only concerns the health insurance, though.
Where/when was this new law announced? I'm crawling all over the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare site and can't find anything. Is this law going into effect in April or being voted on? I've heard a lot of rumors in my years here and nothing's come to pass yet. I would think foreign residents would receive some kind of notification about this. The embassies/consulates should know about this change as well, right? I suppose I'll contact the embassy tomorrow.
Don't count on the embassy OR immigration to give you information. It may or may not even be correct, depending on who you talk to. I heard about this law myself through friends, as well as the law that went into effect earlier this year that requires one to submit proof of payment for city taxes when renewing a visa. Never heard a word from any official sources, unlessyou count word-of-mouth and random news sites as 'official'.
Before I went to renew my visa earlier this year, I went to the immigration office and explained my situation and asked what materials I would need to renew my visa. I was given a printed list. When I came with the materials to actually apply, I was asked for materials that I hadn't been notified of (though not the tax sheet.. this was never asked for) A few days later, I got a notice in the mail that I needed to submit the tax sheets. This was the first that I'd heard of it despite asking ahead of time. _- Things have only gotten stranger from there, but it's a long story so I'll stop now.
Hmm. I guess things have changed since the last time I had to renew. Well, I'll just see what happens in February, so last time it went without a hitch. Thanks anyway. I'm just kind of tired of the rumor mill regarding visas and laws here, you know? Can never seem to get a straight answer from anyone, even the government.
Oh yes, I understand completely. I am really tired of it myself. It's really insane and there is no official way to get information. I find it really sad that we have to hear about new laws concerning our very-very-important visa status from the news! We are all registered residents (I'm assuming), so there is no excuse to not send us all a proper notification of the change in laws.
