Consider it a blessing in disguise that you didn't get into Interac. Some branches are good, but some are so unbelievably bad, it's insane.

I haven't heard many bad things about Shane. I do know most people think they only hire British people, but the do hire others if people apply.

I worked for Interac before and they didn't seem to bad, I had to leave after 6 months cause I had a family emergency back home, I didn't mind working for Interac (maxceed in Yokohama), though I did hear from my friend that the Branch in Tokyo was real horrible, my Branch in Yokohama was ok

Shane, I'll give them a look thanks!

When did you work for Yokohama branch? Because I heard it use to be good, but when I worked for it last year, that was the branch where some of the shadiest stuff I've seen go down, firing people left right and centre for no good reason (and pissing off countless schools in their wake). This story also came out of that branch, so I've few good words for them. Also have heard things about the Tokyo branch.

My honest suggestion? Do everything in your power to avoid big dispatch companies. The pay and quality seems to have gone down, if the people I've spoken to are any indication. If you have experience here before, I'd try getting in with a smaller company or a private school.

wow

I knew all those people mentioned in the article (the Interac Yokohama office team)
they were pretty nice to me when I worked there, i started working for them
May 2006 and left oct 2006, I guess I wasnt there long enough to find out about all the bad stuff that went down.

I've been trying to, but no one has responded back to me, I've only gotten pre-responces saying that they will contact me if I pass their screening.

thanks for the info!

Berlitz hires once you're in country. I worked for them for 5 years and they were pretty good. Ummm bad things? The week's training is unpaid. You have to find your own accomodations.

I've also heard good things about Shane.

If you're outside the country, the JET deadline is coming up in what? January, February?

already in Japan aimegami October 7 2009, 02:57:17 UTC
a lot of the smaller places wait until you are already in japan to hire you (my thinking is so that they don't have to labor or prove the ability to sponsor a visa)

JET rarely places anyone in the city. Most of my JET friends are in the inaka. They also don't guarantee close placements of couples (as i'm sure you know)

hm... with these tough times it's not so common (outside of the eikaiwas you named as no-no) for schools to hire from overseas. i heard there's a small/medium eikawa in Chiba that used to hire people from overseas.

good luck in your job hunt ^_^b

which company is that?

I'm not in Japan just yet, I want to make sure I have enough money in the bank
before heading over there, I kinda want to have a job before I leave, since I think it will be hard to find one with a tourist visa, plus having to leave the country while changing you visa status, that's alot of cash

I highly recommend the Fukushima English Center in Fukushima-shi. It's a smaller, family-run school (the oldest in town) and although I don't think they hire in the fall, it's a school to keep in mind. The American contact's name is Jennifer Monma. She married a Japanese guy, is living there and is the first person involved in your application. They usually advertize on Dave's ESL Cafe. I agree with other posters that avoiding the big companies is a good idea.

Best of luck!
