We found propertyfinder.com very useful in our remote searching to get a sense of what is available at particular price points. Also a book called the London property guide, which has detailed writeups of every single neighborhood in the greater London area...so we'd find some flat in our price range that looked interesting, and then go look up the neighborhood in the book, until we got a sense of where we wanted to focus an in-person search.

http://www.rightmove.co.uk is a UK-wide property site for buying and renting, most estate agencies will have listings there. http://www.upmystreet.com has lots of information about different areas.

For jobs, the guardian newspaper's jobs site is a good place to start for a variety of employment sectors, though most of the major papers have similar sections on their sites.

Are you planning to move to the London area or are you looking nationwide?
