Foreigner

I was talking with some colleagues last night, and elfstar's comment made me wonder this as well. What are the words that people use to describe you where you are currently living (or have lived in the past)?

In Democratic Republic of the Congo, I have heard "muzungu," "mondele," and when I lived in Japan, it was "gaijin."

language, blending in & going native

"ajnabi", and occasionally "ferenji" (which literally means "french", but dates back to the Crusades as generic Westerner).

In Italy I am often referred to as the Americano (which is only partially correct, I am much more Canadian) or more properly "stranieri" (sp?) - stranger or foreigner.

And I would answer to that too. I have also been called the duke of darkness. That was after I tripped out the whole plant though.

"cazzi stranieri" was a common one when i was in italy... but in a good-natured sort of way.

My ex bf and his friends called me "Chinita" in a positive way. I was born and raised in Taiwan, but it was the same for them.

In Ethiopia it's "ferenji" for white people, another word (don't remember it) for black foreigners, and "China!" for anyone of remotely East Asian appearance.

In Sudan, apparently the word of choice is "khawaja".
