fuck, tonight's dollhouse was awesome.

i guess i completely fail at feminism/being a chick, because i always see people who "find the show offensive as a woman" or some such thing, but it's never been an issue for me at all. idk. all i know is that i loved tonight's ep.

quick spoiler. )

I love Dollhouse, too. Idk, I don't really find it offensive as a woman? Or maybe Joss Whedon just has lifetime feminist cred after Buffy, for me? WHATEVER, IT IS AWESOME. Tonight's episode might have been my favorite all season.

ooh our icons make nice counterparts. :P

i'm glad it's not just me. sometimes i feel like there's something wrong with me, because i see friends who are all "this offends my feminist sensibilities" and it just...doesn't bother me at all. IDK IDK IDK!

yeah, i'm pretty sure tonight's ep was my favorite to date. there was SO much awesome in it and i love how we're starting to get a bigger picture of things, bit by bit.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE DOLLHOUSE THO? I WANT TO KNOW. :(

I have problems with Dollhouse but it has nothing to do with ~being a women~ they have male dolls as well who do the same sort of things the women do...it's just the main character is female.

yeah, if people don't like the show or have issues in general, i get that. but like you said, they are guy dolls, too, who do the same kinds of things (as we saw explicitly tonight), so i don't really understand why people find the show bothersome from a feminist pov. *shrug*

Yeah, like it's a show about human trafficking / prostitution done in a Sci-Fi friendly type of way. I can understand/agree with having problems with how THAT element is shown but it's males and females, hell the house is run by a women.

oh, for sure. the nature of the dollhouse, and by extension the show itself, is disturbing. i just don't understand why i see people saying it offends their feminist sensibilities or whatever. even LOOKING for it, i don't see it!

Yeah, I loved those Office episodes finally, but if they don't at least keep the new Dream Team going until at least next season and try to resolve things or get Michael close to coming back by season's end, it will be extremely disappointing. I'm hoping the fact that they moved the MSPC into the same office park is a good sign, so that their proximity can keep them separate yet together, so it doesn't come off feeling as distant as Scranton/Stamford. We'll see. PLZ DON'T LET ME DOWN SHOW, I CAN'T TAKE MORE OF THIS SEASON FIVE BLAHNESS!

I read an interesting article written by a sex worker who hated Joss's portrayal of Firefly for precisely the reasons you mention, actually. Truth of it is, most prostitutes pick their own clients and are educated and many are classy, so showing Inara as this "anti-prostitute" because she's these things is kind of offensive.

I thought it was an interesting point. I used to do outreach with sex workers, but we did a lot of work with those who were also homeless and/or using drugs, so the kind of people most people probably think of when they think of prostitutes. However, my organization hosted a conference that featured a woman who had done all kinds of sex work, from phone sex, to stripping, to escort work, and she was beautiful and smart and sassy and all of those great things Inara had.

I guess, in sum, my point is that some people rightly have an issue with Inara, but I don't agree with the common issue with her: that sex work is bad. But I don't think Joss did anything groundbreaking with her either.
