The Pacific: Against the World (Leckie)

Jul 29, 2010 22:00

Okay, this took me far, far too long to write. I started it a while ago, but it just sat as a few paragraphs for quite a while. Then I slowly picked it back up, wrote a large chunk of it, and decided tonight that I was just going to finish the darn thing ( Read more... )

love how everything threads back to war; the comparison to 4th july, daydreaming about vera.

Oh, not the whole world, of course - but the whole world is a big place, and right now his world is small - it’s exactly 89 miles long and 35 miles across, and it’s in the middle of a big damn ocean across which lies a home he can barely remember even though he’s only been away from it for less than a year.

i loved that part in particular. and how you linked the beginning and the end, ALL OF IT. I LOVED ALL OF IT. i love character centric things like this, and there's never enough, and this one is beautiful and ouch my heart <333.

Thank you so much! It was just kind of this meandering character thing, so I was hoping it wasn't disjointed or boring or anything. I'm so very glad to hear you liked it, thank you~ :D

the fact that this has only one review makes me very sad. :( YOU DESERVE A MILLION OF THEM. <3

He was never good at picking out the constellations - always better with the stories than the patterns

love this line--perfect characterization of leckie

The letters smell like home - it’s hard to say exactly what home smells like, but when he slots his dirty, dusty thumb beneath the flap of a new one and tears it open the smell comes tumbling out in a rush of clean paper and fresh air, just for an instant before it’s gone.

also LOVE your introspection. you have such a beautifully fluid writing style that fits this kind of piece absolutely perfectly. <33 there are a million other lines i could pick out that i love--and the most impressive bit is that you manage to take all these fragments of his thoughts and present them in a perfectly coherent manner. love it & hope that you write more for this fandom! :D

D'awwww, WELL YOU DESERVE COOKIES FOR THINKING THAT. <3

Thank you so very much, seriously! It started out as a number of different paragraphs with no real connection, so I was worried it would read in a disjointed way; I'm so pleased to hear that it came across as coherent.

Just swinging by from reading a Merlin piece, to check out what else you'd written, since I very much like your writing style.

I watched the box set of Pacific about a year ago and loved it. I got sucked into a bit of a war-themed year after reading Generation Kill then Band of Brothers fanfic, and was inspired to look at the source material. Apart from the docu-dramas, there is lots of living history collected on the internet, plus I live near a branch of the UK's Imperial War Museum, so I'm spoilt for amazing stuff.

Loved this Pacific reverie - so fitting with the series yet such a counterpoint.

Aw, thank you so much! It's definitely always nice to see another Pacific fan. <3 I have learned a lot about the war just from watching those shows and reading the books they've gotten me interested in! I went to one of the branches of the War Museum when I was in the UK visiting, and it was fabulous - you're so lucky to live near one! \o/
