Feel the food production!

There's no time for a full post, but I'm just too proud of this bloggable moment to pass it up. I'm wrapping up the third week of my 6-month apprenticeship at Buckwheat Blossom Farm in Wiscasset, Maine. The apprenticeship means a lot of hard work but a lot of good food. It's a Sally Fallon trick. Soaking neutralizes phytic acid, a compound found in nuts, grains, and seeds that inhibits mineral absorption. I soak the nuts in salt water overnight and then dry them in a very low temperature oven for 24 hours or so. It really improves the taste too-- they're a lot sweeter and less bitter.

Rakiyah has been quite good to me, when I've found the time for her. That hasn't been too often of late, but now that I've settled in to the farm a bit I should be able to keep her in shape.
