So it looks like I might be instead of replacing my laptop with a skippy brand new uber laptop instead replacing it with two desktops.

Anyone have any suggestions? Its been many a year since i have done so and am a bit behind the tech.

Not that my tech information is all that sophisticated, but if you're going in for support of any kind, I would advise shying away from Dell. We've always had Dell desktops in the past, but recently, with the one we have now and the one we had before this one, we've crap for customer service and problems with the towers. The one we have now we had to originally send back because they hadn't properly put the face on the tower and it took two hours of "Is it plugged in?" "Did you check the cord at the outlet?" "The green lights over the power button." "The power button is the round button." Etc... I hate the scripts. Plus, they have different warranties for hardware and software and their standard warranty doesn't cover software issues. And invariably, the problems are software issues. That's just been my experience ( ... )

A friend who bought an Alienware computer just after the changeover has had nothing but problems. The video display was failing, was the same on all monitors, she assumed video card but replacing it at her own expense did not fix the problem.

The first Dell tech walked her through phone steps that wiped her drive, after she had asked him several times "should I stop and back up my data before we do this?", and he assured her it was just diagnostic and would not touch her data.

She has sent the computer back to them three times, each time leaving her without a computer for three to four weeks; the first two times they replaced the video card (not the motherboard that turned out to be the problem), and sent the computer back without even testing to see if it would display properly. Also, they did not return the video card she had paid for out of her own pocket. She's not been charged for this under-warranty 'service', but she is now demanding an equivalent brand new computer that works AND her money back for the initial ( ... )
