The barracks and associated watchtower along this long-abandoned dirt road have been in disrepair for nearly fifty years. In the last months, with the growing unrest in the rapidly destabilizing Southern Kingdom, and rumblings of a civil war, a large group of loosely-affiliated mercenaries has reclaimed the stone buildings as a base for their own ( Read more... )

Alison looks down at the stew and the bread and raises an eyebrow. "Umm. I'm, like, a vegan? I don't do meat. And the bread? It's carbs. Bad carbs. And I can't afford to eat them because I can't be the next Britney. Can't I just get a nice summer salad instead? Maybe with a raspeberry vinaigrette dressing?"

She's actually tempted to throw the princess card that she doesn't really have. That is, after all, why she's being held captive in this backwards Amish town that she's slowly starting to figure out isn't a town but a different place in time.

She's seen movies about Amish people on Lifetime. They aren't this lost.

The thickset man, who is probably wider than he is tall, gives her a narrow look and sets the tray down on the straw-covered floor. "Eat it or don't. Not my problem, sweetheart."

Ali pursed her lips. "You don't get to call me sweetheart, spanky." She gives him a practiced look of contempt. "Look," she said, lowering her tone to one of considerable sweetness. "Do me this favour, and maybe I'll do a favour for you?"

"Yeah, like you did a 'favor' for Eli couple days ago, darlin'? I don't think so." He nudges the tray towards her with a wary foot. "Pick the meat out. I'm not fallin' for anythin' you got."

Not far behind is Marie, crouched over the neck of her horse with her hair streaming behind in the wind.

Teeth bared in a wild grin, she whoops as they ride closer.

Her horse collapses under her, screaming in pain from the sword slice across its tendon.

Marie tries to roll away but can't, with one leg caught under the horse.

"Goddammit!" Gotta move, gotta get out... she struggles to get out from underneath it.

The morass of trampling hooves and the clash of men and swords around her adds to the urgent need for her to move.

One mercenary spies opportunity, and closes in for the kill. He manages to get within two yards of her before he's felled by a purple-fletched arrow to the throat.

The rogue Hawkeye pulls his horse to a skidding halt beside her.

"Time to go," he says. "You got your friend?"

"Think so. The large odd fellow went over there and I heard a bunch of yellin'." With a grimace she finally pulls her leg out from under the horse, and then looks up at him.

"Got a knife I can borrow real quick?"

The burnished metal hilt is handed to her, its edge keen despite obvious years of usage.

"Don't lose it," he gripes, as he swings his horse around to loose another arrow at someone else.
