I thought about copying and posting but decided that I was getting too iritated just reading the list to actually have a copy of it myself. I did count though and I've read 16 of them (including the double up that you spotted with C.S. Lewis).
And I have to agree that lists like this can be so subjective - thus the reason of my iritation. It frustrated me that someone thinks that not only should you read the hobbit, but you should do the book equivalent of shooting yourself in the brain and read lord of the rings (I'm sure thousands of fantasy people around the world are upset by that but that life. As a side note I thought the films were brilliant, it was just a shame they had a really crap story).
Ok, probably should have posted this on my LJ since I'm borderline ranting.
The problem is not that people think you should read it - the problem is that people have bad taste! This is apparently a list of the most popular books sold. I guess I just don't tend to read the 'most popular novels of all time.'
I agree on JRR Tolkien - he is one of those writers who had brilliant ideas but could not write. I fought my way through the Lord of the Rings Trilogy when the movies came out and it was horrible. The movies take the good bits and make it digestible. I refuse to touch the Hobbit with a 10 foot pole!
Also, it disturbs me that 90% of Jane Austen's work is on there. She's not *that* good and her grammar is *terrible*.
