I fail at fish

Well, I came home today to find Hikaru belly up. ;______; Gave it the proper porcelin burial. Gaaaaah, Umi and Fuu better make it. The thing is, I don't know if it was because of me, of Hikaru was just a bad fish when I got it. I mean, I don't know if they eat, because it seems that the live, I'm pretty damn sure it's live, plant could be what ( Read more... )

I'm sorry for your loss. Er, what sort of fish are they/what size tank/what are your water parameters? (ppm and all that good stuff) I've been having problems with my water getting to warm for my damn tropicals, so I freeze water in plastic bags and float them in the tank. Keeps the temp down without adding extra water.

From what I've seen, they might be comet goldfish? It's hard since the name is different in Japanese. But, they look like comets.

As of right now, I have no tank, I have to keep them in a this large punch bowl I have in my apartment. I'll be getting a tank on Saturday. As for the water, I've taken some advice off the Goldfish Sanctuary site and I let my tap water run for a minute before filling up the bucket, and then letting the water sit over night. Also, I bought some of those things you put in tap water to purify it.

The frozen water bags look like a good idea, I'll do that after I get my tank.

Thanks!

Yikes! @_@ Comet goldfish get nearly as big as koi ya know. Even small ones need a minimum of 10 gallons *each* with a good filter, or they'll be belly-up in no time. Goldfish are basically poop factories. XD ( ... )

Well, I'm not sure they're comets, but they looked like the comets I saw in a picture. Hopefully when I actually go to buy a tank someone there will know what kind they are and what I can do. For all I know they could just grow only a little bit more.

Hmmm, luckily that I have been only feeding them a pinch, because any more than that they just ignore the food. As for the water, I did buy some cystals for putting in tap water, so hopefully that and the over night has kept the water good.

Of course I have no idea exactly how big 20-30 gallon tanks are, put right now they are pretty tiny, I'm going to measure my table or what not. If they do get too big, then I will see about what I can do with them. I'm hoping they really aren't the kind to get too big.

If they're goldfish, are they a healthy orange color or do they have any black or white spots on them?

It sounds like Hikaru might have died of constipation, which is curable by feeding them peas (just the insides! Not the skins!)

Well, they're both white and orange, but no spots. Fuu seems to be the more active of the two, so I'm not too worried about her, but Umi has me worried.

The thing is, I have noticed fish poop in my bowl, so at least some of them are going. Jason mentioned that they might not have been healthy when I got them, since I got them from the fish scooping game. Hikaru never seemed as active as the others. But I'll try the pea thing too!

Thanks. I'm also hoping I can get some general medicine when I buy their tank.

Alas, poor Hikaru, I knew thee well.

Okay, not so much. But still sad. *sends happy thoughts*
